The hiring process begins with an online application. Once the online application is accepted, the applicant must take a written test, which is made up of basic reading, writing, arithmetic and problem solving multiple choice questions. The next step is an oral panel interview. Upon successful completion, a background investigation is done. The background process involves an extensive written background packet, a background oral interview and a polygraph examination. Criminal records, driving history and credit checks are also reviewed. Lastly, a medical and psychological exam is administered for sworn positions.
It takes 3 to 8 months, depending on any issues in the background, medical and/or psychological examinations. Failure at any step in the hiring process is not an automatic disqualification. Each applicant’s hiring process is taken into account on a case-by-case basis, thoroughly investigated and taken into consideration.
You must first independently apply to and complete the enrollment process with a California POST Certified Police Academy. Once you are enrolled and/or accepted into a police academy, you would be eligible to apply for Deputy Sheriff I — Recruit. Deputy Sheriff I — Recruit typically becomes available online a few weeks prior to your specific academy class start date. Once available, apply online to begin the hiring process with our agency. Upon successful completion of the hiring process, you will be a Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office-sponsored Police Academy cadet from that point forward.
