Fresno County Sheriff’s detectives have released the name of the man involved in this morning’s shooting incident involving a deputy sheriff.  He is 32 year old Oscar Alvarez of Selma.

This morning, shortly before 11:00am, deputies responded to a residence located in the 8400 block of E Nebraska Ave regarding a man at the rear of the residence armed with a gun.

After deputies arrived, they heard yelling coming from behind a large metal building located at the rear of the property.  As they went to investigate, they observed Alvarez, armed with a shotgun, attempting to force two females into a vehicle. Deputies ordered Alvarez to drop the shotgun at which time he released the females and brandished the weapon at deputies.

Fearing for his safety, one deputy fired a single round at Alvarez striking him in the torso area.  After handcuffing him, deputies administered first aid until paramedics arrived.  Alvarez was then transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment of the gunshot wound.  He is currently listed in stable condition.

Detectives have learned Alvarez was an acquaintance of one of the females involved, and had lived at the Nebraska property until recently.

Detective also learned Alvarez fired at least one gunshot prior to deputies arriving on scene.

Based on the investigation thus far, Alvarez is being charged with kidnapping, armed robbery, false imprisonment, brandishing a shotgun at a peace officer and the females, negligent discharge of a firearm, and criminal threats.

No one else was injured in the incident.
