Casimero Casillas

The suspect killed during an officer involved shooting has been identified as Casimero Carlos Casillas, 45, of Fresno.  Casillas commonly went by the first name of Shane.  The Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday.

Around 5:15 pm Monday, Casillas led Fresno Police officers on a car chase in the city, which ended near Clovis Ave. and Lansing Way in Fresno County.  Once Casillas stopped his car, he got out and ran.  Officers quickly detained the passenger in the car.  Officers later found Casillas hiding in the backyard of a home.  Casillas was holding a two-foot metal pipe and refused to surrender to officers.  During the confrontation, Casillas ran toward an officer with the pipe.  The officer feared for his life, so he fired his gun and struck Casillas.  Paramedics rushed Casillas to the hospital where he later died.

Fresno Sheriff’s homicide detectives have taken over the OIS investigation.  The passenger detained was interviewed Monday night and has since been released.  The officers involved in the incident are scheduled to be interviewed Tuesday afternoon.  The officer involved in the shooting was not wearing a body camera.  Detectives have recovered the suspect’s metal pipe.

Casimero Casillas has an extensive criminal history.  One of his prior arrests included a charge of battery against a peace officer.  Casillas also had an active felony warrant out for his arrest tied to a Post Release Community Supervision violation (AB 109).
