On Thursday, the Sheriff’s Foundation for Public Safety hosted a Career Day event as part of the Sheriff’s Activity League (SAL) Summer Program.

The 4-week SAL program employs up to 12 students that meet the following criteria:

1.Age 18 years or older

2.From the Community (we only pay minimum wage)

3.Enrolled in college

These students serve an important role as they are gaining valuable work experience.  They are able to assist us in recruiting younger kids for our program as their brothers, sisters, cousins and friends attend the school in the community.   By overseeing up to 100 kids daily in one area, these students serve as role models. They are able to focus on teambuilding and are also able to answer questions about the college environment.   In partnering with Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission (EOC), we are able to serve breakfast and lunch every day the program is running.  Children take field trips to places such as:  Fresno Chaffee Zoo, Gateway Ice Center, Black-Beards, Wild Water Adventure and the CA Army National Guard Base.

The summer program operates in the communities of Malaga, San Joaquin and Laton.  In addition to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Specialty Units, agencies such as California Highway Patrol, American Ambulance and Fresno Fire Department often participate.

The Sheriff’s Foundation is a non-profit organization formed by the Sheriff’s Office, which uses funds raised during events to promote intervention for at-risk youth and crime prevention for Fresno County citizens.  For more information, visit http://www.foundation4publicsafety.org/
