I’m Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims.
These are unprecedented times and I know many of you are anxious and worried about the possibility of exposure to COVID-19.
I want to take this opportunity to stress the importance of how you can be a part of the solution to ending this pandemic by paying attention to the recommendations of medical professionals.
Remember:
If you are not delivering essential services, Stay at home, only go out for essential needs and only for as long as needed. I have seen some very innovative ideas, churches using technology for webcasting, restaurants boxing food supplies for pick up and grocery stores identifying days and times for seniors only. Continue to be creative.
The Sheriff’s Office has the authority to enforce the State orders but for now I want Voluntary compliance. By and large most people are complying. I am proud of you and I want to thank you all for doing your part. I want to encourage you to keep up the good work.
Flagrant disregard for public health and safety however will be dealt with including the possibility of large fines. One question I have received is regarding the National Guard. The National Guard has been activated but to assist with food distribution only not law enforcement purposes. Martial law is not in effect as you might have seen on social media. There are no checkpoints, vehicle stops or curfews and there is no documentation needed to prove you are going out to for essential purposes.
Do not take advantage of this situation by being involved in activity such as looting, scams, or price gouging. Those who do take advantage and exploit this crisis will be held accountable. Practice social distancing and keep in mind the best vaccine we have right now is six feet of space. Wash your hands often with soap and water.
Be considerate of others. Don’t buy more than you need. This is not the time for panic buying. Make sure you leave enough for others who need those same essential items.
Get information from reliable sources. The situation and how we respond to it may change however infections of misinformation are more contagious than COVID. Reliable Website information that is regularly updated will be shown at the end of this video.
This is the time when the best in us must emerge. Remember even though we stand apart we must work together. Stay safe take care of each other. Thank you for doing your part.
