Fresno County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives have released the name of the suspect involved in last night’s OIS in the City of Sanger. Arrested was 30 year old Phillip Ozuna from Del Rey.
Yesterday, shortly before 6:00pm, a Sanger PD officer attempted to pull over a stolen Honda Accord near the intersection of North & Academy. The driver, later identified as Ozuna, failed to pull over and a pursuit ensued.
For the next several minutes, Ozuna led Sanger PD officers on the pursuit through neighborhoods in the south side of the city. Just after 6:00pm, Ozuna lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fire hydrant and telephone pole at the intersection of North & Brehler.
After the accident, the Sanger PD officer pulled in behind the stolen Honda and immediately exited his vehicle. Ozuna then put the stolen Honda in reverse and started backing in the direction of the officer and patrol car. The officer used his handgun to fire multiple times at Ozuna. After the shooting, Ozuna drove away eastbound on North Ave, followed by two assisting Sanger PD units. During this phase of the pursuit Ozuna intentionally rammed one of the pursuing units.
The pursuit finally came to an end near the intersection of Annadale & “I” St, when one of the Sanger units used his vehicle to intentionally disable the stolen car.
Once stopped, officers made contact with Ozuna in the vehicle and found him to be injured as a result of the shooting. Ozuna was transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Sanger PD immediately requested the Sheriff’s Office handle the investigation and the Homicide Team was called out.
Ozuna, a self-admitted street gang member and wanted parolee, was later booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, felony evading, and parole violations.
