Earlier today, a 61-year-old male inmate was hospitalized with the Influenza A, commonly referred to as the H1N1 flu virus.
The inmate, who has been in custody since this past September, first complained of flu-like symptoms two days ago. He was treated by jail medical staff, however his condition deteriorated. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center where he is currently listed in serious condition.
Due to the probability the inmate contracted the virus while in-custody, inmates housed on the same floor is currently on lock down status with no inmate movement unless absolutely necessary.
Inmates in the specific housing area are being assessed daily, and immunizations are being offered to both inmates and jail staff as soon as possible. A designated housing unit has been established to house inmates exhibiting flu like symptoms.
The Fresno County Superior Court has been made aware of the situation and will only call inmates for court if necessary.
