Detectives with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office have completed their interviews of Reedley Police Officers who were involved in a burglary call, which resulted in an officer involved shooting (OIS).

Shortly before 2:30 am on Monday, September 13th, Reedley Police officers responded to a burglary alarm that had been triggered at the Ace Hardware store located on the 900 block of E. Manning Ave. in Reedley.  Officers arrived and saw a man, later identified as 38 year old Joaquin Luna of Orange Cove, jump off the roof.  Officers began to run after him.  The chase went through a neighborhood where Luna entered the backyards of homes and even climbed onto rooftops.  At one point, Luna broke into a house.  The commotion caused the sleeping homeowner to wake up.  He retrieved his firearm and began to investigate the noise.  However, Luna had already exited the house.  The homeowner stepped outside to look for the possible intruder, still holding his gun.  Officers searching for the suspect were confronted by the homeowner with the gun and one officer fired a shot at the man, striking him in the leg.  Other officers assisting on the call, who continued to search other parts of the neighborhood, found Luna hopping over more fences.  Officers eventually took Luna into custody.

The wounded homeowner was transported to the hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injury.

Reedley Police searched the hardware store and discovered evidence of a break-in.  Luna was booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of burglary, vandalism totaling more than $5,000 and resisting arrest.  He also had an outstanding warrant for burglary.  His bail is $75,000.

Reedley Police requested the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office take over the OIS portion of the investigation.  Homicide detectives responded to the scene.  No determination has been made as this remains an ongoing investigation.
