Detectives Arrest Citibank Robbery Suspect.
Monday morning, Fresno County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Thomas Athey, 29, of Fresno. Athey was wanted for bank robbery.
Shortly after 10:00 am on Saturday, December 6, Athey entered the Citibank located at 5545 E. Kings Canyon Rd. Athey walked up to the teller and passed note across the counter. He claimed to have a gun and demanded money. The teller gave him cash and then left the bank. No weapons were ever seen.
Robbery / Property Crimes Detectives worked non-stop, following up leads to identify the suspect and determine where he might be. A surveillance camera inside the bank captured a photo of the suspect, which proved to be very valuable during the investigation. Detectives ultimately found Athey at a home on the 5200 block of E. Kings Canyon Road and he was taken into custody without incident. Detectives recovered a small amount of cash believed to have been taken from the bank as well as some items which were likely purchased with the stolen money.
Athey has been booked into the Fresno County Jail for bank robbery, which is a federal crime.
