At 2:00 am on Tuesday, Fresno County Sheriff’s dispatchers received a call of a suicidal man, armed with a gun outside of a home.

Deputies responded to the property located on S. Del Rey Ave., just south of Manning Ave. in Selma.

Later information revealed this to be a domestic disturbance between 28 year old Manuel Frausto and a woman.  The suspect, who lives in Selma, but not at this specific location, arrived to contact the woman he has a relationship with.  A physical altercation occurred between the two of them, prior to deputies arriving.  She was able to separate herself from Frausto and locked him out of the house.  While outside, Frausto fired several gunshots, but no people or property were struck.  Dispatchers relayed to deputies that the suspect was pounding on a door of the house.

Deputies arrived and saw the suspect standing in the driveway, holding a handgun.  Deputies ordered him to drop the gun and surrender, but he refused to cooperate.  Frausto eventually made a movement that caused one deputy to fire his rifle, striking the suspect in the upper body.  Deputies approached the suspect to take him into custody and provide medical aid.  EMS personnel transported Frausto to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno where he is listed in critical condition.

Homicide detectives and members of our Crime Scene Unit arrived to process evidence and interview witnesses.  This is an ongoing investigation, and it marks the third deputy involved shooting for our office this year.
