Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested 30 year old Robert Campos of Riverdale.

He has been booked into the Fresno County Jail and is facing felony charges of evading police, assault with a deadly weapon and probation violation.

Robert Campos

Shortly before 10:30 am on Saturday, a deputy tried to make a traffic stop on a car near Auberry Road and Tollhouse Road in Auberry.  The driver, later identified as Robert Campos, refused to pullover.  As the deputy continued to follow the black Honda, Campos pulled into a turnout and flipped a U-turn.  Campos drove directly toward the deputy and struck the front portion of his patrol vehicle, causing moderate damage.  The deputy, who was not hurt, pursued the fleeing Honda.  Once Campos approached Pine Ridge Elementary School on Auberry Road, he drove across school grounds.  Campos then crashed his car into an embankment.  As he got out of the car to run, the deputy saw Campos reach into his waistband.  Fearing he was retrieving a weapon, the deputy fired shots at him.  Campos ran out of sight, into an area covered with trees and bushes.  A woman seated in the passenger seat of the suspect’s car was detained by deputies.

Additional resources responded to the area, including a K-9 unit and the California Highway Patrol helicopter, H-40.  A perimeter was setup to try and contain Campos from escaping any further.  Around 12:15 pm, one of our dogs alerted deputies to an area about 100 yards from the suspect’s car.  Once the dog got closer, Campos came out from hiding in the brush and surrendered.  Deputies took him into custody without any problems.  Campos was not in possession of a weapon at the time of his arrest.

Campos was not struck by the deputy’s gunfire.  None of our deputies were injured during the incident.  This remains an ongoing investigation.
