Alejandro Chanquin Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested of 24-year-old Alejandro Chanquin of Fresno.

He has been booked into the Fresno County Jail on a felony count of evading a peace officer with disregard for safety and driving on a suspended license, which is a misdemeanor.  Chanquin also had an outstanding bench warrant.

Shortly after 1:00 pm Tuesday, a patrol deputy observed the driver of a grey Hyundai run a stop sign at a high rate of speed near McKinley Elementary School.  The deputy activated his lights and siren and attempted to make a traffic stop at the next intersection of W. McKinley and N. Cornelia Ave.  However, the driver Alejandro Chanquin, failed to stop and continued to speed away from the deputy.  Chanquin drove up to 80 mph and ran multiple stop signs.  Chanquin sped through the school zone of Central High West and continued along McKinley through Kerman.  About 10 minutes after the pursuit was initiated, Chanquin made his way to where the pavement ends at McKinley and Lake.  He continued to drive straight into an orchard and in between a row of trees.  Deputies were finally able to surround him once his car became stuck in the dirt.  Chanquin got out of his car and surrendered by lying down in the field.  A deputy took him into custody without incident.  During an inventory search of the car, deputies recovered a billy club and a knife.   In the end, Chanquin had driven a total of 14 miles on McKinley Ave.  He exhibited bizarre behavior after being captured and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for a medical / mental health evaluation.
