It is with great sadness that the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of retired K-9 Reno. Reno was most known for his incredible recovery after being wounded in the line of duty during a July 2009 shootout between an armed suspect and deputies.
Losing his left eye in the shooting, Reno was released from the veterinarian emergency the next day and returned to duty for a short period just six-weeks later.
Reno received several awards, including the 2009 Community Champions Award presented by The Big Fresno Fair, the 2010 Animal Rescue Hero Award presented by the Central Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Purple Heart, presented by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
Reno was a valuable part of the Sheriff’s Office during his time in service and settled nicely into retirement five years ago. Reno was 12 years old when he passed away on Saturday.
“This boy battled some illness recently and was a true warrior. He was full of energy yesterday (Friday) and he fought until his very last breath,” said Lt. John Reynolds.
The FSO is currently staffed with nine K9 teams.
