Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims is pleased to announce the opening of another jail floor will open on schedule. The floor, located in the North Annex Jail will re-open on Saturday, January 5th. This is the last floor in that facility that had been shut due to budget cuts. This will provide an additional 432 male minimum security beds to the jail system to bring it to a total capacity of 3,289.

On October 30, 2012, the Board of Supervisors approved the Sheriff's proposal to hire and train staff necessary to open the last closed floor of the North Annex Jail. The appropriation increase was $2,983,619. The funding included hiring Correctional Officers as well as medical personnel to handle the increase in jail population. The stated goal at that time was to open the floor in January 2013.

Sheriff Mims said, "The Sheriff's Office has worked hard to reach this goal. Maximizing our jail capacity is more important now than ever. Due to realignment, there has been a significant increase of hardened criminals now staying in local jails rather than going to State Prison. Although we are still mandated by a Federal Court decree to release inmates when we reach capacity, we will be able to hold more criminals accountable."
