At 7:15 am on Wednesday, a citizen driving on Dower Avenue, just south of Herndon, reported finding a man lying on the side of the road who appeared to be injured.

A sheriff’s deputy, an officer with the California Highway Patrol, Fresno firefighters and EMS personnel responded to check on the man and determined he was deceased. Once a deputy coroner arrived to examine the body, it was discovered the man had suffered at least one gunshot wound.

Detectives arrived at the scene to begin a homicide investigation. Detectives and members of the Crime Scene Unit collected evidence from the immediate area. A motives is unclear, as is whether the victim was killed at this location or if they were dumped on the side of the road. Detectives are searching for possible surveillance cameras around the area and are asking the public to contact our office if they have camera recordings captured anywhere in the surrounding area.

The victim has been identified as Matthew Tidwell, 42, of Orange County.
