Fresno County Sheriff's deputies yesterday afternoon arrested a Fresno man wanted in connection with a carjacking incident which had occurred earlier in the day in the City of Fresno. Arrested was 24 year old Zesar Chavez.
Shortly before 11:00am, Fresno PD broadcast a carjacking that occurred at the intersection of Fresno & Belmont. The vehicle taken during the incident was described as a tan colored Ford Aerostar van. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male armed with a knife.
At about 3:30pm, a deputy on an unrelated vehicle stop in the Mayfair area, was contacted by the victims of the carjacking who advised the stolen van was driving in the area. The van was last seen driving westbound on Weldon towards First.
Deputies started checking the area, eventually spotting the van driving north on Orchard towards Clinton. Deputies lost sight of the van for a short time but located it in the Fresno Art Museum parking lot at Yale & First.
Witnesses reported seeing a Hispanic male subject running northbound on First St towards Clinton.
Eagle One assisted on the call and spotted the possible suspect walking in the 3000 block of E Princeton. Assisting deputies responded to that location and detained the subject, later identified as Chavez. Chavez was positively identified as the suspect in the carjacking.
Fresno PD responded to handle the investigation. Chavez was later booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of robbery and vehicle theft.
