Sheriff Margaret Mims warns the public about possible fundraising scams connected to the Boston Marathon bombings. Information is being received that very soon after the bombings, groups and/or individuals began registering domain names and fake Twitter accounts that are used to collect donations to assist victims of the terrorist attack. The Sheriff urges the public to be very cautious when clicking on links or using social media sites that claim to be working on behalf of victims of the bombings.
Sheriff Mims says, "Social media gives scammers access to millions of people who may be fooled in to donating money that will never go to victims in need."
Those who want to donate are urged to donate directly to reputable organizations such as the American Red Cross.
