Area 1 is an extensive patrol area covering more than 2,400 square miles, bordering five different counties. Bordering counties include: Kings County to its south; Monterey and San Benito Counties to its west; and Merced and Madera Counties to its north.
The Area 1 substation is located in the City of San Joaquin. The personnel of Area 1 include one lieutenant, three sergeants, three community service officers, two robbery/property detectives, and 32 deputy sheriffs. The men and women assigned to Area 1 provide 24-hour patrol and detective services, crime prevention, vehicle abatement, contract school deputy, as well as a host of community liaison functions.
The Fresno County Sheriff is the contract law enforcement for the City of San Joaquin. Area 1 has within its boundaries six incorporated cities: Coalinga, Huron, San Joaquin, Kerman, Mendota, and Firebaugh. In addition to the incorporated cities, Area 1 has a number of unincorporated communities such as: Tranquillity, Biola, Five Points, Helm, Three Rocks, Cantua Creek, and Dos Palos make for a rich blend of diverse population to an agricultural-based economy.
Area 1 is primarily comprised of agricultural farm land with some livestock ranching. Oil wells are abundant in the hills surrounding Coalinga. The east side of the Coastal Mountain Range makes up the west side of Area 1. Interstate 5 runs along the base of those foothills in Fresno County for 63 miles.
Area 1 personnel have created partnerships with the faith community, local businesses, service organizations, schools, and individual citizens to problem solve and improve the quality of life in the various communities. These efforts have resulted in the T.A.G Program (Teaming Against Graffiti) wherein the business community, citizen groups, County Probation and the Sheriff’s Office have formed a partnership to eliminate graffiti; and a community maintained park in Three Rocks.
The men and women assigned to Area 1 continue to deepen our roots in the communities we serve and strive to make a difference in quality of life issues, crime prevention, and crime-fighting efforts.
