Vehicle Stop Leads To Arrest Of Two On Child Neglect Charges

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office today announced the arrest of two after deputies discovered them smoking marijuana while driving. Arrested were 23-year-old John Bajay Alvarado and 30-year-old Amber Elizabeth Sprouse.

Last night, shortly after 9:00pm, Alvarado and Sprouse were pulled over near Clovis and Belmont for traffic violations. Earlier, while stopped at Clovis and Fwy 180, the deputy had detected the odor of marijuana coming from their vehicle.

The deputy contacted Alvarado and Sprouse, and also learned Sprouse's one-year-old daughter was in the back seat.

During the investigation, both Alvarado and Sprouse admitted to smoking marijuana while they had been driving. The driver, Alvarado, did not have a valid driver's license and was found to be on felony probation. Deputies also discovered a methamphetamine pipe in the infant's diaper bag.

Both Alvarado and Sprouse were eventually arrested on charges of felony child endangerment, and narcotics violations. Both were booked into the Fresno County Jail.

The infant was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
