Due to the recent events surrounding Walter Levon McDaniel, and several media requests, the Sheriff's Office is releasing the following information regarding the July 6th release of Walter McDaniel from the Fresno County Jail.
On June 27th, McDaniel was arrested by Fresno PD officers and booked into the Jail on charges of child stealing, and an outstanding felony arrest warrant out of Madera County.
The child stealing charges were not filed by the District Attorney's Office. However, McDaniel stayed in custody on the warrant.
On July 1st, Sheriff's personnel sent a teletype to the Madera Department of Corrections advising of McDaniel's incarceration on their warrant. The teletype also advised that McDaniel needed to be picked up from the jail by July 6th at 6:00pm.
On the evening of July 6th, McDaniel was released from custody as he was not picked up on the warrant.
On that same evening at 6:50pm, another teletype was sent by the Sheriff's Office to the Madera Department of Corrections advising them that McDaniel had been released from custody, and that the arrest warrant would have to be reactivated.
All communications between the Sheriff's Office and Madera Department of Corrections were sent via the secure, statewide CLETS teletype system.
All actions taken by the Sheriff's Office regarding McDaniel were done so pursuant to policy, procedure, and law.
