Update: Huron Officer-Involved Shooting

Fresno County Sheriff's homicide detectives are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early this morning.

Shortly before 3 a.m., a Huron Police Department officer initiated a subject check on a bicyclist in the area of Cherry and Los Angeles in the City of Huron. The suspect tried to flee on his bike but crashed a short distance away. The officer gave chase on foot.

As the officer approached, the suspect produced a small caliber handgun, and pointed it at the officer. Fearing for his life, the officer fired several rounds from his department-issued handgun, striking the suspect multiple times.

Emergency medical personnel immediately responded to treat the suspect; however, he was declared dead at the scene.

The suspect's handgun was recovered.

Huron Police requested the Sheriff's Office handle the investigation. Members of the District Attorney's shooting team also responded.

The identity of the suspect is not being released at this time other than he is a Hispanic male in his late 20s from the City of Huron.
