Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims announced this evening the capture of the second suspect wanted in connection with this past weekend's home invasion robbery in Firebaugh which left his accomplice dead. Arrested was 29 year old Kristopher Rupe of Firebaugh. Rupe was arrested earlier today in Reno, Nevada.
Early this past Saturday morning, Firebaugh PD officers responded to a home invasion call at a residence located in the 800 Block of Dodderer.
The two suspects were apparently armed, one with a handgun and the other with an ax. The victim was able to arm himself with a sword and killed one of the intruders. He was later identified as 34 year old Aaron Baeza of Firebaugh.
The second suspect, identified as Rupe, fled the scene in a dark green colored Ford F-150 pick-up truck, CA license 6T04402.
Firebaugh PD immediately requested the Sheriff's Office take over the investigation, and homicide detectives responded.
During the subsequent investigation, information was developed that Rupe may possibly be in the Reno/Sparks area of Nevada. Early this morning, Sheriff's detectives responded to Sparks, Nevada where they were assisted by Sparks PD, Reno PD, and the US Marshall's Office out of Reno.
Several locations were checked before Rupe's location was narrowed down to a residence in a neighborhood near the intersection of Montello & Oddie in downtown Reno.
A perimeter was set up and a house to house search was started. During the search, Rupe ran from the original location. He was eventually caught without further incident a few houses away. Rupe was handcuffed, and placed in the back seat of a police vehicle to be transported back to Sparks PD.
While stopped at a signal light, Rupe was able to escape through a rear window and again flee on foot. Rupe ran into a nearby Applebee's Restaurant where he barricaded himself in the women's restroom.
Officers surrounded the restaurant and evacuated everyone inside. During the standoff, repeated commands were made to Rupe for him to come out but he refused. A canine was then deployed in to the restroom. Rupe gave up and was taken in to custody before the canine took control of him.
Rupe was then successfully transported to Sparks PD where he started making suicidal threats. He was then transported, under heavy guard, to a local hospital for observation where he remains at this time.
During Rupe's arrest, a firearm was located in a backpack he had been carrying. Detectives are unsure at this time whether it is the same firearm used in the home invasion robbery.
Rupe was arrested on a warrant charging him with two counts of home invasion robbery. The bail on the warrant is $800,000.00. He is also now facing charges in Nevada.
The Ford F-150 has not been located. Detectives are asking anyone with information the whereabouts of the vehicle, or any other information regarding this case, to please contact the Fresno Sheriff's Office at 488-3111.
